    Making a difference:

Hacienda Barú National Wildlife Refuge receives many groups of students from the local schools, employs 33 people from the local communities and conserves 330 hectares (815 acres) of natural habitat, which is the main attraction of the area.

Hacienda Barú attracts a lot of eco-tourism to the area; this kind of healthy tourism creates economic wellbeing for the local communities.

Barú Beach, which is part of Hacienda Barú NWR, Baru has received the Ecological Blue Flag designation for the fifth consecutive year, a recognition given to communities that meet standards for sea water quality, beach quality, access to potable water, wastewater treatment, environmental education, safety, and administration. The Ecological Blue Flag committee of Playa Barú is made up of company employees and park guards.

In 2007, National Wildlife Refuge Hacienda Barú was given the Ecological Blue Flag award in the "Protected Natural Spaces" category (Natural Reserves). This was the first year that natural reserves had an opportunity to participate in the Ecological Blue Flag designation and only seven reserves received awards.
