Description of the area:

Montecristo is a riverside lodge in the tropical rainforest, within the Private Montecristo Wildland Reserve (more than 200 acres protected) on the best part of the San Juan River in the buffer zone of the Indio Maíz Reserve, with unequalled natural beauty. It is an ecological and socially responsible lodge. Our reserve was declared an important area for birds by the American Bird Conservancy.

The complex has individual buildings that are solid and secure, with wide, cobbled pathways for walking through the tropical gardens. From the dock, there are covered walkways for the protection and enjoyment of the guests during rainy spells. The site is for recreation, relaxation and learning, via alternative tourism with many adventure opportunities on land as well as in the river.

The reserve has a series of walking trails in the rainforest where you can see monkeys, toucans, parrots and macaws in their natural environment, as well as wild flowers of every kind. There is a variety of habitats to explore. We were the first to offer tours to see sunken ships and caimans. Of the local tours, our rates are the best. The area is ideal for sport fishing tarpon and snook and it is a control point for international sport fishing tournaments.

We offer all-inclusive packages with lodging, meals and, horses, trail walking, canoes and kayaks for a single price, without hidden costs at check-out.

    Making a difference:

  • All our workers are from the local area and they have the best salaries in the zone.

  • We make nearly all our purchases of supplies in nearby villages.
  • We support sports, education and health activities for the villages of Sábalos and El Castillo.

  • We have begun to use solar energy in all the cabañas.

  • We use a diesel generator to pump potable water from our well, but soon we will be making our own bio-diesel.

  • We recycle as much as we can, and we compost to make fertilizer for our gardens.
  • Alfonso Agustín Llanes is the owner of the Reserve and the Lodge and he has been pioneer of environmentally sustainable development in the San Juan River. Since 1990, he has been helping the local communities and the development of sustainable tourism using more than one million dollars of his inheritance.
