Description of the area:
Our island is very small and underdeveloped; the Nature Reserve Visitor Center is also our community center and local library as well as a small café that serves coffees, tea and sweets to locals and visitors. It is adjunct to the nature reserve and has three telescopes for observing the booby colony without distributing their nesting area. The Little Cayman National Trust under my leadership has also developed the Blossom Village Community Park which has playground equipment, picnic tables, a boat ramp, dock and rest room facilities. It is centrally located in the most populated area of the island. The iguana colony is a very popular for observation of the island’s native iguana.
Our Bloody Bay Marine Park for scuba divers is world famous with very definite laws in place to not touch or damage in any way the coral reefs. My resort runs a full scuba diving operation with 6 dive instructors on staff, who are all very involved in the environment above and below the sea.

Making a difference:
My (Gladys Howard's) principal focus as Owner and Manager of Pirate's Point is helping to preserve the surrounding environment and cultures:
I serve as chairman of the Little Cayman National Trust, and our primary focus is environmentally based. This group is in charge of the nature reserve of the red-footed booby colony -- a RAMSAR site. The group is in the process of raising funds to establish an iguana sanctuary in the Preston Bay area which is in the vicinity of our resort.
I am the local guide for nature hikes and escort our guests to the visitor center at the nature reserve and around the island to acquaint them with the flora and fauna of the entire area.
I have been the organizer of various activities for the entire island, such as Mardi Gras, Pirates week, bike rally, raft race, domino tournament and other events that provide entertainment as well as promoting local history.
My resort also sponsors Dr. Reid Goforth, retired director of U. S. Wildlife and Fisheries for a two week birding event each fall during the migration time, and for a week in the spring when the migrating birds return through our island.
Presently I am cultivating native plants to develop a nature park that is slated for the original landfill. It is our hope that by example more people involved in landscaping will choose to use native plants.
My scuba diving staff is very aware of conservation and works with our divers to enable them to dive with less weights in order to preserve the coral reefs from diver contact.
