Description of the area:
Quilla Pacari or Luna del Amanecer is an alternative model project of a women’s group that pursues the wellbeing of their families and the community in general. The community is San Francisco de Cunuguachay, Parroquia parish, 16 kilometers (10 miles) from the capital of Riobamba canton in Chimborazo province. It has a pleasant climate with average temperatures of 50 to 59° F. At an altitude of 10,682 feet above sea level, mornings are cool and the nights are somewhat chilly.
Activities in the area include: sharing community life, bike riding, traditional Andean medicine, handicrafting, and cultural events, promoting unexpected encounters with the indigenous Puruwa people.
In addition to promoting community-based tourism, the women’s group carries out alternative production projects in their area: factory producing carrot-based marmalades of different flavors, crafting of wool hats, bakeries, and more, which complement the daily life of the community.

How to get there:
Making a difference:
The 50 members of the San Francisco community’s women’s organization manage Quilla Pacari; they are the direct beneficiaries of the tourism work and the productive projects developed at the location. The personnel working in the micro-enterprises are permanent and they rotate positions. This helps with the transfer of knowledge as a strategy for building capacity in the community’s people.
Income generated for the tourism operation is income for the local community; it is reinvested in productive projects and integrated community development: infrastructure maintenance and improvement, promotion and commercialization of tourism products and services, integral training, health, and more.
The community works hard on conservation and soil management. They do not have sufficient water and must use wells to collect the water that is then used in a spray irrigation project. They are now conducting a campaign for reforestation with native plants that is putting up windbreaks to protect the organic gardens that sustain the local families.
