Description of the area:

The Galapagos Islands consist of 13 major islands, 6 smaller islands, and 42 identified islets.
The Galapagos constitute one of the most active groups of ocean volcanoes in the world, particularly in the two large westerly islands, Isabela and Fernandina. More than 875 species and varieties of Galapagos plants have been described. Of these 228 are endemic, and approximately 397 are native species, while 250 are introduced species. The fish population of Galapagos is represented by 289 species from 88 families, many of which are found only here. The islands are a photographer's dream.
Due to the tropical sun which shines almost every day and the tameness of its animals, even an amateur can capture unusual and magnificently hued scenes of nature. Located in the Pacific Ocean 600 miles west of the Ecuadorian coast, the isolation of the islands has allowed life forms to evolve into species found only in Ecuador. Today the islands are a well managed and protected National Park of Ecuador.
